About Dr. Arthur R. Metz

A lifetime of philanthropy, generosity, and care began when Arthur R. Metz was born in 1887 near South Whitley, Indiana. He came to Indiana University in 1905 and later graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago. Prior to making the Windy City his home, he served as a captain in the Armed Forces during World War I.

Dr. Metz
Dr. Metz became one of Chicago's foremost physicians and surgeons. He served as a personal physician to chewing gum magnate Philip Wrigley. So impressed was Wrigley that he had Dr. Metz serve as doctor to Wrigley's team, The Chicago Cubs. Dr. Metz also served the city's booming railroad companies as chief surgeon.

Educator and Researcher
A passionate believer in education, Dr. Metz taught at several medical schools. He was a founding member of the Certified American Board of Surgery and belonged to numerous other medical associations. Active in X-ray research and practice, Metz developed the "barium meal" in 1924. This technique became the universally adopted means for X-raying the gastrointestinal tract.

A Friend to IU
Dr. Metz was a devoted IU alumnus. He served on the IU Foundation's Board of Directors from 1960 until his death in 1963. Dr. Metz could be seen cheering riders at the Indiana University Student Foundation Little 500. In 1948, he created the Metz Foundation to help medical students. Current contributions to IU from the Metz Foundation include funds to the Metz Scholars Program, the Department of Theatre and Drama, the Arthur R. Metz Distinguished Scholarships, the Wells Scholars Program professorship endowment, the Arthur R. Metz Medical Scholarship, and the Arthur R. Metz Carillon.

To further honor Dr. Metz's generosity to Indiana University, the Indiana University Student Foundation has created the Metz Grant to help support the activities of eligible IU Bloomington student organizations.
